Why did the US secretly buy 81 old Soviet planes from Kazakhstan?

The United States of America has purchased 81 Soviet-era fighter jets from Kazakhstan, says a report by the Kyiv Post.

Kazakhstan, which is upgrading its air fleet, auctioned 117 Soviet-era fighter and bomber aircraft, including MiG-31 interceptors, MiG-27, MiG-29 fighter-bombers and Su-24 bombers from the 1970s and 1980s.

The stated sale value was about $2.26 million, equal to an average value for each plane of $19,300.

The newspaper cited reports from a Ukrainian channel and the Russian news site Reporter as saying the US bought 81 obsolete and unserviceable fighter jets.

The Kyiv Post reported that the motive behind the US purchase remained undisclosed, but that such planes could be used in Ukraine, where similar planes are in service.

The Russian website Reporter said that the sale was made through "offshore companies".

Meanwhile, given Ukraine's continued reliance on Soviet-era weapons, the plane could either serve as a source of spare parts or be strategically deployed as decoys at airfields, the Kyiv Post reported.

Kazakhstan, once part of the Soviet Union, has maintained close ties with Russia and was historically one of its strongest allies. But the relationship has changed since Russia invaded Ukraine, with Kazakhstan aligning itself more with the West, drawing the ire of some in Russia.
