United States President Donald Trump unveiled the new presidential jet at Joint Base Andrews, a luxury aircraft donated by the government of Qatar, which now bears the American national colors and the inscription "United States of America".
The plane is intended to bridge the gap between two modified Boeing 747-200s, which have served as Air Force One since 1990, and two new planes that Boeing is adapting for presidential use. The latter are not expected to be ready for at least another two years.
The new aircraft also changes the exterior appearance of the presidential fleet. The traditional light blue color scheme, originally conceived by Jacqueline Kennedy and used for decades, has been replaced by a combination of dark blue and white, interrupted by red stripes.
The US Air Force announced on Friday that the aircraft will soon begin operational certification flights, which are considered the final test of the modification process.
"The safety and security of the commander-in-chief remains our highest priority. From the outset, we have carefully evaluated each request to expedite delivery while maintaining the high standards required by the presidential mission," said Air Force Secretary Troy Meink.
Trump had expressed dissatisfaction with delays in the new Air Force One aircraft program, which according to estimates will not be completed before the end of his term in 2029.
The Pentagon received the plane, donated by Qatar, last year and has been working in recent months to prepare it for presidential service. The process has been expedited in part because the plane's interior has not undergone major structural changes.
