The German foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, has called for the rapid admission of the countries of the Western Balkans to the European Union.
Her appeal comes as the bloc marks the 20th anniversary of its expansion by 10 countries in 2004.
" The European Union stands for freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Just like 20 years ago, once again today millions of Europeans see an opportunity and a promise to become EU citizens. And we cannot once again allow a whole generation to sit in the EU's waiting room, as in the countries of the Western Balkans. We must not miss the opportunity to make our Union bigger and stronger and therefore more secure. Our Union of Peace and Freedom is open for new members ," said the minister.
The head of German diplomacy has emphasized that in order for the membership to be successful, the EU must take concrete actions.
" However, in order for other countries' membership of the Union to be successful, we must ensure that the EU remains able to take action both internally and externally. The rich experience of EU members who have joined the Union since 2004, countries that have successfully mastered a long transformation process, is particularly valuable here ," said Baerbock.
Baerbock also pointed out that since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine, expansion has become a geopolitical necessity.
The political and geographical " gray zones" in the Balkans or in the east of the EU are very dangerous. We cannot afford such gray areas, as for Putin they are an invitation to meddle and destabilize. Showing bold responsibility means today that we have to make our European Union fit to accept new countries ", concluded Foreign Minister Analena Baerbock.
