American Secretary of State Antony Blinken started today meeting with Chinese officials in the framework of a two-day visit with high expectations for the reduction of tensions between Beijing and Washington. He met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang to discuss the significant concerns the United States has on a range of security issues and to ensure that competition with China does not turn into a clash or conflict.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Beijing. He is the first top US diplomat to visit China since 2018, for meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi, and possibly Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang welcomed Secretary Blinken and his accompanying delegation to the entrance of the Diaoyutai Government Villa in Beijing on Sunday. They exchanged brief greetings in English as they shook hands in front of the Chinese and American flags.
After heading to the meeting room, neither Secretary Blinken nor Mr. Qin made any comments to reporters, who were allowed to film in the room for a few moments.
The Chinese assistant foreign minister, who attended the meeting, tweeted a photo of the meeting between the two officials, writing that he hoped the meeting would restore relations between the two countries to the point the two presidents agreed upon when they met in Bali. .
American and Chinese officials have acknowledged the need to stabilize the relationship between the two countries and to have channels of communication between senior officials.
But expectations are low because of strained relations over human rights, Taiwan, technology and other security issues.
Shortly before leaving for China, Mr. Blinken said during a press conference in Washington that the American delegation would talk directly with the Chinese side about "very real concerns" about a series of issues.
During a previous visit to Singapore and while standing alongside Singapore's foreign minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, Secretary Blinken said that the United States wants to make sure that "the competition we have with China does not turn into a clash or a conflict."
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said before the visit that "the United States sees China as a 'primary rival' and as the 'most significant geopolitical challenge.' This is a strategic misjudgment," the Chinese spokesman said.
US President Joe Biden said yesterday before leaving for an electoral meeting in Philadelphia that he hopes to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the coming months. /VOA
