Tensions in the North, the German official calls on Kurti and Vucic: Sit down in

The rapporteur for the Western Balkans in the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, Boris Mijatovic, tells DW that Kurti and Vucic should sit down at the negotiating table for the escalation of the situation.

Deutsche Welle: Mr. Mijatovic, the situation between Serbia and Kosovo is escalating. How should the parties reach a settlement?

Boris Mijatovic: There is no easy solution, but a lot of work. Prime Minister Albin Kurti was elected with an absolute majority of over 50% of the votes. He is certainly able to implement what he has promised now and cannot show compromises in a coalition. Mr. Kurti is dedicated to Labor and Justice and acts in this direction. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has also won the elections, but he must face his revanchist and nationalist forces in the country and start fulfilling what was agreed upon. Of course, the Association of Municipalities with a Serbian Majority must be realized and it is a challenge for both parties. There is a very good suggestion from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. There are many other models of how to implement an association of municipalities. Mr. Vucic is now talking about autonomy again. I don't think it's the right tone.

Deutsche Welle: The EU Commission and the US are now threatening Kosovo with sanctions if, for example, Kosovo does not organize new elections in the north. Is this the right way?

Boris Mijatovic: I think we have to be careful not to act too much as a player in this situation. We are not political actors in parliaments or in the government. We have a foreign policy role. We can support the situation with diplomatic exchanges. But we make a mistake when we intervene in politics and become political actors on the ground. This is a problem that is also encountered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as we can see from Mr. Schmidt. It is better to approach the situation and the task with humility and focus on what we want: that Mr. Vucic and Mr. Kurti to sit at a table and think about how they should handle the situation at the border, in order to ensure a peaceful future of the two neighboring countries in Europe.

Deutsche Welle: Without the USA and the EU as a protective power, Kosovo could lose a lot: support in international organizations, membership in the Council of Europe or visa liberalization. At least this is the concern, after the recent statements of the US special envoy Escobar. How realistic is the scenario?

Boris Mijatovic: What you are sketching are certainly models or perspectives that are not favorable. But let's focus on the positive, not the fear. We have an agreement, the Ohrid Agreement, in the spring, it has four or five annexes that remain to be negotiated. There is work to do. Mr. Vucic and Mr. Kurti should sit at a table and think together how they see the situation. A few days ago, during the presentation of the mayors, people were injured. Not only 41 KFOR soldiers from Hungary and Italy, but also over 50 demonstrators. I wish everyone a speedy recovery. But I would like to know why there were gunshot wounds. I would like to know where the firebombs come from. I would like to know who sent these people there or why these people independently bring weapons to a demonstration that hurt people? Attacks on security forces are unacceptable and intolerable. I expect that everyone, from Mr. Vucic and Mr. Kurti, as well as international actors, to answer the question of who committed these crimes. This is my request for now. We are present there with the security forces. If we have these people on the ground, which both governments want, I would like the governments to work to ensure their safety./DW We are present there with the security forces.
