White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner intended to kill President Donald Trump.
"What was supposed to be a fun night at dinner with President Trump cracking jokes and celebrating free speech was hijacked by a deranged, depraved individual who sought to assassinate the president and kill as many senior Trump administration officials as possible."
I was with President Trump and the First Lady backstage after we were quickly escorted to safety by the Secret Service. President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence must end.
"Thank you to law enforcement for keeping us all safe, including the brave officer who took a bullet to the chest and immediately acted to neutralize the perpetrator of the attack. Pray for our country ," Leavitt wrote in a post on X.
