From Trump's statements to investigations into "Wide Awakes" and the "No Kings" protests: what really emerges about the connection between individual radicalization and the political climate in the US

Fear has returned to Washington. The shooting at the traditional White House Correspondents' Dinner, one of the emblematic events of American political journalism, has reopened questions about security, radicalization and the political climate in the United States. President Donald Trump directly linked the episode to the "No Kings" movement, declaring that "this is why people like this exist". But what is really known about the perpetrator of the attack, the "Wide Awakes" group? And above all: is there a structured connection between these movements?

Authorities have identified the suspect as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles, who was arrested after opening fire near the hotel where the event was being held. According to reconstructions, the man was heavily armed and acted with political motives, targeting administration officials. The attack injured a Secret Service agent, who was saved by his bulletproof vest, while the president and other guests were quickly evacuated.

A key element is the document sent before the attack, which contained radical and strongly anti-Trump positions, currently at the center of investigators' verifications. Allen had sent his parents what he called a "manifesto". In the text, the author explained the reasons for the action, emphasizing: "I am a citizen of the United States of America, the actions of my representatives reflect on me" and "I am no longer willing to allow a pedophile, rapist and traitor to stain my hands with his crimes", referring to the US president.

Moments before the attack, Allen had sent a message to his family and apologized to his parents, colleagues, students, bystanders and others for what he was about to do, according to a transcript of his writings obtained by NBC News through a senior administration official. “I expect no apology,” Allen wrote. “I reiterate my deepest condolences.”

“Wide Awakes”: a fluid collective

According to some sources, the man may have had contact with the Wide Awakes, a contemporary progressive collective inspired by a historical 19th-century movement associated with abolitionism. Today, the Wide Awakes, relaunched in 2020 by a group of artists, present themselves as a decentralized network, without a defined leadership, that uses art and performance to promote political and social activism. Their public identity is linked to creative and non-violent initiatives.

The group describes itself as a modern “revision” of the organization formed during the 1860 presidential election, made up of anti-slavery supporters of President Abraham Lincoln. The original members were known for organizing raucous rallies in support of the Republican president in New York and other northern cities in the run-up to the crucial elections that led to the Civil War.

However, it is essential to emphasize that the author's affiliation with this group has not been conclusively confirmed and that there is no evidence to date that the collective supports or promotes violent actions.

The “No Kings” movement and the political clash in the US

According to the information so far, the author had participated in a “No Kings” demonstration in California. In the interview with “60 Minutes”, Trump linked the episode to the political climate and the protests against the government, mentioning the movement: “The reason there are people like that is because there are people who are part of the ‘No Kings’ movement… I am not a king.”

During the same interview, he had a direct confrontation with journalist Norah O'Donnell, whom he accused of having read an excerpt from the manifesto. "I was waiting for you to read it, because I knew you would: you are terrible people," Trump declared, dismissing the accusations: "I am not a pedophile. I have not raped anyone. I have been completely exonerated."

In response to the journalist, who pointed out that she was quoting the author's words, the president insisted: "You shouldn't read them on '60 Minutes'. It's a shame. But go ahead, let's end the interview." /Adapted from Il Giornale /
