Sanctions against Iran, Von der Leyen clashes with Merz

Chancellor Merz proposed easing measures in exchange for resuming shipping in the Strait of Hormuz

It is too early to lift sanctions on Iran in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, declared Ursula von der Leyen, contradicting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, a corridor through which about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passes, for nearly two months, as Europe's energy reserves begin to run low.

The European Commission President used a visit to Berlin to criticize Chancellor Merz, who belongs to the same party, the Christian Democratic Union, after he proposed easing sanctions in exchange for restoring energy flows.

"We think that lifting sanctions would be too early," Von der Leyen said, adding "there is a reason why sanctions are imposed on Iran, because of its behavior towards its own population."

She added that the Iranian regime has killed at least “17,000 young people” this year. “It is the repression of human rights and in particular women’s rights in Iran … that led to the imposition of sanctions,” she stressed.

According to her, lifting sanctions would require a "fundamental change in Iran."

The European Union recently renewed sanctions on Iran until the end of 2027 in March, after in February it included the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the list of terrorist organizations, a long-standing demand of opposition groups against the regime.

Asset freezes targeting individuals and trade restrictions were reinstated late last year after Iran was seen as withdrawing from the nuclear weapons ban agreement, known as the JCPOA.
