The co-chairs of the NATO Watch Group in the US Senate have opposed President Donald Trump's statements about a possible withdrawal of the United States from the alliance, emphasizing that such a decision cannot be made unilaterally.
Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Senator Thom Tillis stated that NATO remains the strongest and most successful alliance in history, underlining its role in guaranteeing security and economic stability, as well as in protecting trade relations.
In their statement, they stressed that the US Congress will not allow the US to withdraw from NATO. According to them, a bipartisan law – previously drafted by Marco Rubio – clearly stipulates that only Congress can authorize such a decision by the president.
"Congress and the American people know that we are strongest when we stand together with our allies ," the statement said.
“Let us be clear, Congress will not allow the United States to withdraw from NATO. A bipartisan bill that was authored by then-Senator [now U.S. Secretary of State Marco] Rubio, which became law, prevents any president from unilaterally making such a decision. Instead, the law clearly states that only Congress can authorize the president to withdraw the United States from NATO. This will not happen. Congress and the American people know that we are stronger when we stand together with our allies ,” the two senators said in a statement.
The reaction comes after President Trump told Reuters that he is considering withdrawing from NATO, linking this possibility to the lack of support from allies for American positions on Iran. In an interview with the Telegraph, he described the alliance as a "paper tiger."
At the same time, Shaheen and Tillis recalled that NATO activated the collective defense clause after the September 11, 2001 attacks and that thousands of allied soldiers lost their lives in joint missions in Afghanistan.
Support for the alliance was also expressed by Senators Chris Coons and Mitch McConnell, who emphasized that a strong and united NATO increases the security of the United States. According to the legal framework in force, any decision to withdraw the US from NATO requires the support of two-thirds of the Senate.
The president's statements come in a context of heightened international tensions, as media reports have suggested that several allied countries, including Spain and Italy, have not allowed the use of their air bases for US military operations in Iran.
