United States President Donald Trump has stated that the federal government should focus primarily on funding military defense, suggesting that programs like health care and day care should be managed by states.
According to an analysis by Aaron Blake, the comments were made during a closed Easter luncheon and later published by the media. Trump stressed that the United States cannot financially afford all social services at the federal level, adding that “we are fighting wars” and therefore the priority must be national security.
He recalled a conversation with the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, in which he had requested that federal funds not be allocated for daycare. According to him, these responsibilities should be transferred to the states, which could raise taxes to cover the corresponding costs.
Trump also argued that programs like Medicaid and Medicare are a huge burden on the federal budget and should be decentralised. However, the White House clarified that his statements also relate to the need to combat abuse and financial mismanagement in these programs.
The analysis highlights that, while healthcare spending constitutes a large portion of the federal budget and is expected to increase significantly in the next decade, the way this argument is presented has political consequences.
A CNN poll shows that most Americans oppose the costs of the war, especially in the face of rising fuel prices. Some 71% of respondents oppose a plan to spend $200 billion on the war, while 70% consider the conflict unjustified in terms of financial and human costs.
Other polls confirm the public's lack of willingness to bear additional economic costs due to the war.
According to the analysis, Trump's statements create a stark contrast between military spending and social programs, an approach that could be politically unfavorable at a time when public opinion is critical of the costs of the conflict.
