Serbs start rebellion against Trump's son-in-law, petition against luxury

The opposition Kreni-Promeni movement said 10,000 people signed the petition in less than 24 hours.

An opposition group in Serbia launched this Monday a petition against the project to be financed by the firm of former President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in the center of Belgrade, in the former headquarters of the Serbian army destroyed by NATO bombings. s in 1999.

A while ago, Kushner confirmed reports that his company plans to finance the project in downtown Belgrade. It would have a high-rise hotel, a luxury apartment complex, office space and shops.

The petition asks the Serbian government to respect the law, which states that the building can only be returned to its original function. He also wants the Museum of Serbian History to be established there.

" The construction of a hotel on the site of this building is illegal and represents the destruction of our dignity" , said the opposition movement Kreni-Promeni, said that 10,000 people signed the petition in less than 24 hours.

Pro-Trump government officials in Serbia have welcomed the project, but the opposition and many in the general public have spoken out against it. For many, the site of the bombed army command building is a powerful symbol of Serbia's resistance against what they called NATO aggression 25 years ago.

Earlier this month, Albania's tourism ministry admitted it had received an investment project application from Kushner's firm, Affinity Partners, to turn a former military base on the Adriatic island of Sazan into a resort-filled site. Prime Minister Edi Rama said that Albania is proud to have attracted such interest.

Kushner's plans in the Balkans appear to have been partly through relationships established during the Trump presidency.

He said he worked on these deals with Richard Grenell, who served as the United States Special Envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue and briefly as Acting Director of National Intelligence during Donald Trump's term.

We recall that Kushner served as a senior adviser in the White House and after leaving office, he founded the firm Affinity, which has assets worth $3.1 billion.

His firm is backed by Middle Eastern investors who enjoy state support, including about $2 billion from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "The Washington Post"
