The violence in Gaza and the war in Ukraine are marking a tumultuous and bloody end to the year, and have tested President Joe Biden's foreign policy goals.
"American leadership is what holds the world together. American alliances are what keep America safe. American values are what make us a partner that other countries want to work with," says President Biden.
President Biden has supported Ukraine in its nearly two-year war against Moscow's aggression. But further US support has been blocked by Republicans who want tougher policies to protect the US border.
As for China, President Biden has managed to manage an intense rivalry without getting into conflict, putting pressure on Beijing especially in high-tech competition and security, while strengthening alliances in Europe and with Indo-Pacific countries.
“We have four new bases in the Philippines that we can use. We can help bring Japan and South Korea closer together. NATO now has a mission in the Indo-Pacific, something that is still taking shape but is clearly present. Through partnerships with Australia, Britain, India, Japan known as AUKUS or Quad, we have had great success," says Robert Daly, director of the Kissinger Institute at the Wilson Center for China and the United States.
According to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, American leadership has been highlighted in many regions.
"I expect that next year we will have other advances and accelerate all these changes", says Mr. Kirby.
But US support for its closest ally in the Middle East is now under fire after Hamas carried out the October 7 terror attack in Israel.
Israel's retaliatory strikes against Hamas, the US-designated terrorist group, have caused many civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip, fueling anger in the Arab world and threatening the region's stability, especially if Iranian-backed groups such as Hezbollah join the war.
In addition to the nuclear threats of North Korea and Iran, the war in Gaza is another foreign policy burden as President Biden prepares for the 2024 election campaign.
"The public is frankly tired of a foreign policy that plays the role of an activist. What we're seeing is that while the US continues to support all goals of the foreign policy agenda, that's only going to get more and more difficult in the days ahead," said Emma Ashford, an analyst at the Stimson Center, an organization that with foreign policy and promotes international security.
Americans don't usually decide who to vote for based on foreign policy, but Mr. Biden's support for Ukraine and Israel and the threat of another war in Europe or the Middle East are worrying many Americans.
Especially as his potential rival, former Republican President Donald Trump, is claiming that his foreign policy of putting America first on the agenda, ahead of foreign policy issues, kept the country safe and prosperous while he was in office. on duty./VOA
