Xi Jinping addresses the people and alerts the West: Taiwan will soon join
Xi Jinping

The Chinese president has warned of the start of a new conflict with Taiwan...

The year-end speech of the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, has alarmed the world. He addressed the nation today declaring that China will be reunified and the return of Taiwan to the control of the "motherland" is "a historical necessity."

After the tensions of a few months ago, the situation seems to have calmed down in China-Taiwan relations, but these relations have always been a powder keg. The US has made it clear that it will not allow Taiwan to be invaded, but today the Chinese president added fuel to the fire by warning of an imminent conflict.

In two weeks, on January 13, the island will vote to elect a new president and renew its Parliament. Xi used a harsher tone than in his speech a year ago, when he described the Chinese and Taiwanese as "members of one family". Hours before the president addressed the nation, a spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Bureau called the current Taiwanese vice president and Democratic Progressive Party candidate "a hard-headed worker for Taiwan independence and a destroyer of peace in the Taiwan Strait."

Xi recalled that "some conflicts continue in the world" and reiterated that China wants to "work with the international community for the common good of mankind." Xinhua also reported that Xi sent a message to Vladimir Putin at the end of the year, in which the Chinese president stressed that "in the face of international and regional changes and unstable situations, China has always maintained relations with Russia."

Regarding the domestic situation, Xi argued that, after the impact of Covid, the Chinese economy "continues to improve" and is "more resilient and dynamic". And the recovery, despite the "headwinds we'll encounter along the way," will continue into 2024.

He then addressed the youth, assuring them that the government will work "to provide them with the opportunity to succeed in their careers". For China, youth unemployment is a major socio-economic problem: in June, 21.4% of youth aged 16 to 24 were unemployed. / Pamphlet
