In the last speech for this year, Pope Francis called for more peace and love. As he recalled 2023 as a year dominated by war, from St Peter's Square in the Vatican, Pope Francis prayed for 'the people of Ukraine and the Palestinian, Israeli, Sudanese and many others' to live in peace and without war.

" At the end of the year, we will have the courage to ask ourselves how many human lives have been destroyed by the armed conflict, how many dead and how much destruction, how much suffering, how much poverty. Anyone interested in these conflicts must listen to the voice of conscience, put an end to the destruction ," Pope Francis said.

Prayers for peace, calls for the end of conflicts all over the world, for finding a solution through sincere and persistent dialogue between the parties were led this year by the head of the Vatican.

" There are no real winners in any war. Wars are always losses, always. There is never total victory. One side defeats the other, but behind it there is always a defeat and a price to be paid ," Pope Francis said.

The Holy Father called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the creation of humanitarian corridors to alleviate the suffering of the residents. He also called for a solution to the conflict in the Middle East, saying Israel had the right to defend itself from attack, as he condemned the rise of anti-Semitism around the world.

" Terrorism and extremism do not help resolve the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, but only lead to hatred and cruelty. The Middle East does not need war ," said Pope Francis.

He lamented the "depressing" situation in the Gaza Strip, calling on believers to take only one side in the conflict between Israel and Hamas - "the side of peace". He called for all possible efforts to avoid a humanitarian disaster, British media reported.

Speaking of the "terrible tension that can be felt in many parts of the world," he said that war only brings death and destruction.

" I call on all parties to maintain the flame of dialogue and self-restraint and to reject the shadow of enmity. Violence begets violence, stop conflicts ," the Pope said, addressing pilgrims gathered in Rome's St. Peter's Square.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, the 87-year-old pope called for real negotiations and finding a solution to the crisis. / Pamphlet
