US authorities have arrested the niece and great-niece of the late Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in the US, according to a State Department statement.
According to authorities, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter were detained by federal agents on Friday after Secretary of State Marco Rubio decided to revoke their permanent resident status in the United States.
The official statement states that both are currently in custody under the care of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, while no further details were provided on the specific reasons for this decision or on further legal proceedings.
The incident has brought back into focus the figure of Qassem Soleimani, one of the most important figures in Iran's military and strategic structure in recent decades. Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force, an elite unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which handles operations outside Iranian territory.
He played a central role in expanding Iran's influence in the Middle East, supporting allied groups in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere. For Tehran, Soleimani was considered the architect of regional strategy and a key figure in the fight against extremist organizations such as ISIS. On the other hand, the US considered him responsible for operations that endangered American interests and allies in the region.
Qassem Soleimani was killed in January 2020 in Baghdad, in a drone strike ordered by the US. His killing sparked strong international reactions and significantly increased tensions between Washington and Tehran.
