China's Foreign Ministry said today that "the United States is the empire of lies," reacting to a US State Department report that accused Beijing of spending millions of dollars on information manipulation efforts.
China's goal is to "build an information ecosystem in which propaganda and disinformation of the People's Republic of China gain support and become dominant ," the report said.
According to the report, China was manipulating the global media through censorship, data collection and covert buying of foreign media.
" The report ignored the facts and itself is false information ," the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the source for the report was false information from agencies of the US Department of State

The United States' report comes amid controversy over Beijing's efforts in recent years to combat the negative image of China that it says is propagated in the world media.
