US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said a ceasefire now would allow Vladimir Putin to rest, rearm and re-attack from the Ukrainian territory he has already taken.
Speaking in Helsinki today, Blinken said a ceasefire could only be part of a "fair and lasting" peace deal, which includes the withdrawal of Moscow's forces from Ukraine.
" A ceasefire that simply freezes the current lines in place - and allows Putin to consolidate control over the territory he has captured, and to rest, rearm and re-attack - is not a just and lasting peace," he said .
Blinken added that this would send a worrying message to other "aggressors" around the world. He also said that Moscow should be made to pay the costs of rebuilding Ukraine, and be held accountable for its decision to invade.
