The US has new plans to withdraw Turkey from its alliance with Russia. Washington is trying to convince Ankara to give up Russian S-400 air defense missiles, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said on Turkish television on Tuesday.
As reported by the CNN Turk news network, Nuland said that if Ankara changes direction and gives up Russian anti-aircraft systems, the way for Greece to receive fighter jets will be open.
"If we solve the S-400 issue, we will be happy to include Turkey in the F-35 program. "Once we resolve this issue, we will have to ensure that Turkey has a strong anti-aircraft defense," said the American diplomat.
Nuland said the US was willing to sell the Patriot system to Turkey, but Ankara made another choice midway through the negotiations.
"We were in the process of negotiating the sale of the Patriot, and while those negotiations were going on, Turkey went in a different direction ," she said, referring to Ankara's choice to buy the Russian S-400 systems.
"We have been offering to talk about strengthening air defense for many years, both before and after the purchase of the S-400s. As you know, this is a complicated issue. Everyone needs air defense these days. We see this all over the world. But if we can still overcome this issue, the CAATSA sanctions issue will go away and we can go back to the F-35 talks," the No. 2 State Department official said.
In the same interview, Nuland confirmed that the US has no intention of withdrawing from Syria and emphasized that the absolute priority in Gaza is the release of the Israeli hostages.
