The Pentagon is considering sending about 3,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division as part of a rapid-response force to Iran, The New York Times reported, citing US military sources.

According to the report, the likely target of this deployment would be Kharg Island, a major hub for Iranian oil exports. The island is of strategic importance to Iran's economy, as most of the country's energy exports pass through it.

The brigade involved is part of the "Immediate Response Force," which can be deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours. According to sources, these troops would operate in coordination with US Marine units already moving to the region.

The plan calls for the Marines to initially intervene to secure and repair the airport infrastructure on Kharg Island, which has been damaged by recent US airstrikes. This would then allow C-130 transport aircraft to land to bring in troops, equipment and supplies.

The 82nd Paratroopers, while lacking heavy combat equipment, are considered suitable for rapid and flexible operations. They can be used to reinforce or replace Marine forces after the initial phase of the intervention.

The New York Times report comes at a time of heightened tension in the region and in parallel with diplomatic efforts to open negotiations between the US and Iran. So far, there has been no official confirmation of the approval of this plan, which remains in the evaluation phase by US military structures.
