Young people against, old people for / The referendum in Italy highlights the

The recent referendum in Italy has revealed a clear and significant phenomenon: a deep generational divide in voting patterns. Data compiled by Consorzio Opinio Italia for RAI shows that young people voted overwhelmingly against, while older people were more supportive of the reform.

In the 18-34 age group, the “No” vote dominated convincingly with 61.1% against only 38.9% for “Yes”. Even in the 35-54 age group, the tendency against the reform remains in the lead, with 53.3% “No” versus 46.7% “Yes”. In contrast, citizens over 55 lined up in favor of the reform, albeit by a narrow margin: 50.7% for and 46.7% against.

This crucial role of young people was also emphasized by the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, who declared that “young people make the difference”, despite legal obstacles that limit voting for non-residents in the cities where they study or work. She promised that this situation will be changed in the future, guaranteeing the right to vote for this category.

In the absence of this possibility, many young people managed to vote by registering as representatives of party lists. In Lombardy alone, the Democratic Party gave around 1,800 non-residents the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. According to Pietro Radaelli, secretary of the Young Democrats of Lombardy, this was a response to a serious problem that the government had chosen not to address.

This result comes in a context where, in the 2022 general election, young people had a high level of abstention, with 42.7% of those under 35 not participating in the vote. However, the referendum seems to have mobilized a good part of them, producing a noticeable impact on the result.

Analysis of the vote clearly shows that Italy is facing a strong generational divide, with young and old having different visions for the direction of the country and key reforms.
