The United States has imposed a new package of sanctions on Iran, targeting 35 entities and individuals involved in what the Treasury Department calls the country's "shadow banking" network. The decision comes as negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked.

According to US authorities, these financial networks operate outside the formal banking system and are used to move funds on a large scale, avoiding international controls. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the tens of billions of dollars that, according to the US, have been channeled to support operations that Washington considers terrorist.

At the same time, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) warned that any company making payments to secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz – currently blocked due to tensions – risks facing “significant sanctions.”

The Strait of Hormuz remains a strategic point for global energy trade, as a significant portion of the world's oil passes through it. The US warning signals an escalation of economic pressure on Iran and raises the risk of further disruptions to global energy supplies.

These measures are expected to have an impact not only on the Iranian economy, but also on international markets, adding uncertainty at a time when geopolitical tensions are rising.
