"US to pressure Moscow", Zelensky: Ready to meet with Putin, but we
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with Sky News, expressed his willingness to sit down at the table with Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks, emphasizing that he will make every effort to achieve peace.

He stated that the United States has the capacity to influence the end of the conflict, but according to him, greater pressure is needed on the Kremlin. “The United States is more powerful than it thinks about itself. It has real influence over Putin. It can stop this war,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president called for tougher sanctions, including measures against the families of the Russian elite, as well as the supply of Ukraine with more advanced weapons systems. According to him, only through increased pressure can Moscow be forced to enter into serious negotiations.

Speaking about possible timelines for achieving peace, Zelensky cited a "window of opportunity" until the US midterm elections in November.

"Now we have an opportunity. What happens over the next year depends on these months. If we can achieve peace before the important elections in the US, this is our time," he said.

On the issue of "winning" the war, Zelensky was reserved. He stressed that recapturing all the territories at this point is very difficult and would come at a high cost in human lives.

"It depends on what people mean by 'gain'. It's very difficult to talk about territories. To take back all the land today is very difficult and there will be huge losses of human life. But the good thing is that Russia cannot advance on the ground, so they don't win and we don't lose," he declared.

Zelensky stressed that the surrender of fortified cities such as Sloviansk and Kramatorsk constitutes a "red line."

"This is our land. If we leave, 200,000 people there will fall under Russian occupation. Who said they want to become Russian? If they don't want to, they will be killed or sent to the front or to prison," the Ukrainian president said.

In the interview, he also spoke about his relationship with former US President Donald Trump, which he described as "not simple", emphasizing, however, that the partnership between Ukraine and the United States goes beyond individuals.
