The United States imposed new sanctions against Belarus on Wednesday, the Treasury Department said. The punitive measures are against eight individuals and five entities, which are suspected of financing the Belarusian government.
"This action targets several entities involved in the Belarusian regime's ongoing repression of civil society, participation in the Russian Federation's unjustified war in Ukraine, and enrichment of the repressive leader of the Belarusian regime," the Treasury Department said in a statement, Reuters writes.
Lukashenko has repeatedly accused the West of trying to topple him after mass protests against his rule erupted in 2020 following a presidential election the opposition said he won fraudulently.
Western sanctions have been imposed on Belarus over the years in connection with that alleged coup and election fraud. Minsk also allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory to send troops to Ukraine on February 24 last year.
