The date of the lynching of the European Union initiative, which forces travelers to pay a certain fee to enter the countries of the Schengen area.
The EU has consistently claimed that ETIAS would become operational by mid-2024, but an EU official has confirmed that the effective date for ETIAS has now been pushed back to May 2025.
" We initially hoped that the EES would become operational by the end of this year or, at the latest, at the beginning of next year. Due to unforeseen delays, it has become evident that this deadline is unattainable. As a result, the implementation of ETIAS has been rescheduled to May 2025, with the possibility of further postponement, " the EU official said.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an EU border security system, an automated IT system that will, in future, register travelers from third countries whenever they cross an external EU border . The system has been continuously pushed alongside ETIAS. The two systems are deeply connected. Although Entry/Exit can function properly without ETIAS, it is impossible for the latter to become operational without EES.
Anitta Hipper, Spokesperson for the EU Commission for Home Affairs, Migration and Internal Security, had previously confirmed that ETIAS cannot be made effective without the EES.
" The entry into operation of ETIAS can only take place five to six months after the entry into operation of the EES, " said Hipper.
The postponement of ETIAS has also been confirmed by the French Foreign Ministry, according to which, the launch of ETIAS is planned for 2025, without specifying a more precise period when this should happen.
