Asylum seekers from countries considered safe, who arrive in Italy and are caught trying to bypass checks, must now pay a sum of €5,000 to avoid being placed in a detention center while their application is examined.
The measure was published on Friday in the official government gazette by the Ministry of Interior and is likely to cause controversy.
2023 was a record year for the arrival of immigrants in Italy. It is estimated that around 133,000 asylum seekers have arrived in the country so far, almost double the number registered last year and triple compared to 2021.
Meanwhile, after last week's wave, arrivals at Lampedusa have slowed with the arrival of bad weather. In a few days, the Italian island saw the arrival of over 6,000 people, most of whom have now spread to other regions of Italy.
Also known as the "hot spot", the migrant accommodation center in Lampedusa was overcrowded a few days ago, while now there are only 1,000 people.
