Death toll from Spain nightclub fire rises to 13, deadliest in decades

At least 13 people have died in a nightclub in Murcia in southeastern Spain in what is being described as the deadliest fire in decades, with emergency services fearing the toll could rise further.

Rescue teams are still searching for survivors under the rubble of the fire. The flames started in the early hours of Sunday at the Teatre nightclub in Atalayas, on the outskirts of the city, the emergency service reported on the X social network.

Four other people were injured during this incident. In the images published by the emergency service, firefighters were trying to put out the fire inside the night club. The fire destroyed part of the roof.

Jose Ballesta, the mayor of Murcia, said that "bodies will still be pulled from the ruins", which is a difficult task due to the "risk of collapse" of the building.

"We feel devastated," he told Spanish television 24h, adding that rescue teams are still looking for people reported missing. He said the fire broke out around 6:00 a.m. Sunday and that it took three hours for rescue teams to bring it under control.

Ballesta emphasized that the cause of the fire is unknown and that the teams are working to understand this.
