Greece also continues to be under the threat of wildfires, while on one of the most difficult fronts of dozens of wildfires across Greece, in Kryoneri, 30 kilometers north of Athens, firefighters, volunteers and residents are trying to save one of the houses that has been engulfed in flames.
Greek authorities have ordered the evacuation of this village and the adjacent one, Drosopigi, after several houses there were also burned.
Powerful fires have broken out near Athens and in other areas, including the Peloponnese peninsula as well as the islands of Crete, Evia and Kythira.
Several regions are at the highest alert level, Red Category 5, which means extreme risk of forest fires due to hot and dry conditions.
In the last 24 hours, "52 fires have broken out, of which 44 have been neutralized immediately in the initial stage," the Fire Service stated.
Faced with this situation, Greece requested assistance from the European Union through the RescEU mechanism, for six firefighting aircraft to fight the flames. A firefighting unit from the Czech Republic is also helping as part of the European assistance.
Wildfires have broken out in various regions after a long wave of hot weather with temperatures exceeding 45°C in recent hours, while strong winds spread the flames. According to information from the Greek emergency service, five people have been taken to hospital as a result of the fire in the Attica region.
On the island of Kythira, a fire trapped dozens of people on a beach, who were rescued by the coast guard and three private boats.
On the island of Evia, northeast of Athens, two fire engines were destroyed and two firefighters were taken to hospital with minor injuries. There is damage to houses, however an assessment will be made once the firefighting work is completed.
In the Messinia region of the Peloponnese, evacuations of residents are being carried out, as the fire front is considered very dangerous.
Greece and other Mediterranean countries are located in an area that scientists call a "wildfire hotspot" with outbreaks common during hot, dry summers.
These fires have become increasingly destructive in recent years due to rapid climate change, adding to calls for a new approach to dealing with them.
A very high fire risk (risk category 4) is predicted today (27/07/2025) in 11 regions of the country, according to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crises and Civil Protection.
Specifically, a very high fire risk (risk category 4) is predicted for the following areas:
• Ionian Islands Region
• Western Greece Region
• Peloponnese region
• Central Greece Region
• Attica region
• Epirus region
• Western Macedonia Region (Florina Region, Kostur Region, Kozani Region)
• Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (Evros Region)
• Thessaly Region (Magnesia Region, Larissa Region, Trikala Region)
• South Aegean Region (Rhodes Region)
• Crete region
