At least 35 people were killed and 30 others injured after two buses collided in Syria.

The accident occurred on Saturday on the Deir ez-Zor-Damascus road, a major highway of over 400 kilometers that connects eastern Syria to the capital. The collision occurred on the section between al-Sukhnah and Palmyra.

The Syrian Interior Ministry announced that one of the buses was carrying members of the Internal Security Forces, while the other had civilians on board.

According to the ministry, ambulances were immediately sent to the scene to assist the injured.

The Syrian state news agency SANA reported that several helicopters were also sent to the accident site to transport the wounded to the Homs Military Hospital.

The highway where the accident occurred is known for its poor safety standards, a consequence of the deteriorating state of civilian infrastructure in Syria following the nearly 14-year civil war.

In October, the Syrian Minister of Disaster Management and Emergency Response, Raed al-Saleh, stated that more than 2,000 road accidents had been recorded from January to the end of September, emphasizing that they are among the leading causes of death in Syria.
