Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented to the security cabinet a political plan for the future in the Gaza Strip after the end of the war against the Islamist militant Hamas. The Hamas organization is categorized by the US, EU, Germany and other countries as a terrorist organization. It was the first time Netanyahu presented such a plan publicly.
Israel's war against Hamas began after the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel. According to Israeli data, 1160 people were killed and 250 people were taken hostage in these attacks. 130 hostages are still being held in the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli data, about 30 of them should be dead.
Who governs in the future in Gaza?
Still, the Israeli plan for Gaza has vague formulations. So it says that Gaza will be administered in the future "by local officials with professional experience". These "must not be connected to terrorist organizations or countries that support terrorism and will not be paid by them." But it is not determined who these officials will be. The Palestinian Authority that governs West Jordan is not expressly mentioned in the letter. But his participation in a future administration of the Gaza Strip is not excluded either.
Security check by the Israeli army
According to media reports, specifically the Times of Israel and Hareetz newspapers, in the future the Israeli army should have "full security control" of the entire coastal strip. This means destroying all Hamas military structures. The Israeli army, according to the plan, will be able to operate at any time in the Gaza Strip and have "unlimited freedom" for its missions.
Even from a new road, which divides the Gaza Strip into north and south, Israel promises better security control according to the media. Observers, however, doubt whether Israel can use this route to prevent the return to the north of Palestinian refugees who fled south when the war began. According to Haaretz, the plan provides for an intermediate zone between the Gaza Strip and Israel, which is controlled by the Israeli army and to which civilians cannot return. This area would further reduce the habitable area in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Israel will also operate on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip and prevent smuggling to Gaza.
End for UNRWA?
Another post-war objective of Israel is to shut down the UN Palestinian aid organization, UNRWA. The Israeli Prime Minister accuses this organization of being infiltrated by Hamas. According to the Israeli accusations, some employees of this organization have participated in the wide attack of Hamas against Israel. The UN has dismissed the culpable staff and launched an internal investigation. As a reaction to this, a number of countries, among them the USA and Germany, cut off aid to this organization.
Refusal of the demands of the extremists
Nentanjahu did not meet the demands of the right-wing extremists in his cabinet. They had requested, among other things, that the Gaza Strip be used for the settlement of Israeli settlers. The Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, and Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Minister of Security, had requested that the Palestinian population be settled outside the Gaza Strip.
Since January, Netanyahu had rejected the idea of establishing Israeli settlements in Gaza. Even the American foreign minister, Blinken, had criticized this statement. Expanding settlements in the Palestinian territories hinders peace, Blinken said.
Israel not for the two-state solution
Netanyahu rejects the two-state solution demanded by the international community. With this, he goes against the objectives pursued by the USA. The United States is for the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas, which must regain control of the Gaza Strip. A spokesman for this autonomous authority rejected Netanyahu's plan.
"The Gaza Strip will be part of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital," the spokesman said, according to the Palestinian news agency, Wafa. If it wants stability and security in the region, Israel must end the occupation of the Palestinian territories and recognize an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital ," said the spokesman./DW
