Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Western proposals for a "security force" in Ukraine a day after any ceasefire came into effect, following a summit in Paris aimed at finalising plans for security guarantees.
French President Emmanuel Macron said 26 of Ukraine's allies had formally pledged to deploy troops "by land, sea or air" to help provide security once the fighting stops.
He did not provide details about any of the countries involved.
Putin sought to suppress the allies' initiative, with a warning that any troops deployed in Ukraine would be a "legitimate target," especially if they appeared now, although there are no plans for an immediate deployment.
There appears to be little hope for a ceasefire for now, after last month's summit in Alaska between Putin and US President Donald Trump raised hopes for a meeting with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky and a possible peace deal.

Zelensky described the decisions taken at Thursday's meeting in Paris as the first concrete step.
The US has not made clear the extent of its involvement. The French president said this would be finalized in the coming days.
Trump recently indicated that US support could "probably" come in the form of air support, and Zelensky said he had spoken with the US leader about "maximum protection for Ukrainian skies."
Trump said he was "having a very good dialogue" with Putin and planned to speak with him in the near future. Putin confirmed on Friday that he was having "an open dialogue" with the US president.
Russia has said its military is advancing in Ukraine on all fronts.
Ukraine and its allies believe that a ceasefire must be reached in Ukraine before any attempt to secure a broader peace agreement, although Russia disagrees.

A source at the Elysee Palace suggested ahead of Thursday's talks that there were several historical examples of ceasefires that had lasted without a full peace agreement.
The source pointed to the demarcation line between North and South Korea, where a ceasefire had lasted for years with a strong deployment of US allies serving as a signal to North Korea.
