Scandals and gaffes; Pete Hegseth, the redeemed man who wants to "kill
US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth

According to an analysis published by Corriere della Sera, comedian and “Saturday Night Live” host Colin Jost has turned US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth into one of his most frequent satirical figures. In a television sketch in December, Jost mocked him by calling him the leader of “ Operation Kill All ,” a reference to a US operation that killed suspected drug traffickers at sea.

According to a Washington Post report, the order for the operation that killed people on a floating vehicle was allegedly given by Hegseth himself, although responsibility was later attributed to an army general.

“Warrior Ethos”
Pete Hegseth, a former veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a former Fox News commentator, has stated that he aims to bring what he calls the “warrior ethos” to the Pentagon. The US Department of Defense is the largest institution of the federal administration, with about 3 million employees and a budget that reaches 849 billion dollars.

According to Italian media analysis, the name of the latest operation against Iran, "Epic Fury", is related to this approach of Hegseth, who during Congressional hearings a year ago had emphasized the importance of the "lethality" of the armed forces.

His nomination as Secretary of Defense was confirmed by a narrow margin in the Senate, only after Vice President JD Vance intervened with the deciding vote. Some senators had expressed reservations because of allegations of inappropriate behavior and alcohol problems raised by a former sister-in-law of his, allegations that Hegseth has denied.

Controversies and security issues

In March, Hegseth was embroiled in another controversy after he posted sensitive information about an upcoming attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen in an unsecured Signal chat. The conversation included family members and, reportedly, a journalist from The Atlantic magazine.

The minister downplayed the incident as an oversight, but a Pentagon report warned that releasing the data could have put the lives of American soldiers at risk.

President Donald Trump publicly criticized Hegseth, but did not remove him from office, unlike several other cabinet members.

Approach to the conflict with Iran

Speaking about the current operation against Iran, Hegseth stated that the military intervention "is not over yet," but will not last indefinitely like the conflicts in Iraq after 2003.

He said that the Trump administration does not intend to engage in lengthy processes of "nation building", a strategy that he said failed during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Comparison with Donald Rumsfeld

Hegseth is among the youngest Pentagon leaders in history, following Donald Rumsfeld, who led US strategy in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Italian media recall that during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the US administration predicted a quick victory. However, the conflict turned into a long and bloody war, a reality that Rumsfeld commented on with the well-known phrase: "Stuff happens".

The analysis raises the question of whether the current American leadership could face similar consequences in new conflicts in the Middle East.
