Israeli agents are conducting extensive surveillance of American and allied forces stationed at a new American base in southern Israel.
This is reported by The Guardian, referring to diplomatic and military sources informed about the disputes over open and secret recordings of meetings and discussions.
The scale of intelligence gathering at the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) forced the base's American commander, General Patrick Frank, to call an Israeli counterpart to tell him that "the registrations must stop here."
Staff and visitors from other countries have also raised concerns about Israel's records within the CMCC. Some have been warned not to share sensitive information due to the risk that it could be collected and used.
The US military declined to comment on Israeli surveillance activities. The Israeli military also did not comment on Frank's request to stop the recordings, stressing that conversations within the CMCC are not classified.
“The IDF documents and summarizes the meetings in which it is present through protocols, like any professional organization of its kind, in a transparent and agreed-upon manner,” the Israeli military said in a statement. “The claim that the IDF is gathering intelligence on its partners in meetings in which it is an active participant is absurd.”
The CMCC was set up in October to monitor the ceasefire, coordinate aid and draw up plans for the future of Gaza under Donald Trump's 20-point plan to end the war. Giant copies of the document are on display in the building.
The soldiers stationed there were tasked with supporting the increase in essential supplies to Gaza as part of the deal. However, Israel has frequently restricted or blocked deliveries of food, medicine and humanitarian goods. A full blockade this summer brought the territory to the brink of famine.
Initially, it was reported that Israel was handing over authority over the entry of goods into the territory to the US military, but two months after the ceasefire, according to a US official, Israel retains control of the Gaza perimeter and what enters.
