But to stop the fighting, simply freezing the war is not enough; we must first address the root causes of the conflict. General Apti Alaudinov, 53, shares Vladimir Putin's peace-loving spirit, awarding him the highest honors in recent years, from the Medal of Courage to the Hero of Russia award. But the special feature of this general, considered one of the most capable among those leading the so-called Special Operations, is that he is Chechen and commands the Akhmat Spetsnaz, the unit that unites Wagner veterans, Chechen troops and minorities from across Russia and the former Soviet republics.
In Russia, he is best known for repelling Ukrainian troops who, in August 2024, occupied almost a thousand kilometers of territory in the Kursk region. "Ukraine is losing the war," Alaudinov explains in this exclusive interview with Il Giornale, "precisely because of that intervention. In Kursk, they lost their best units and wasted the weapons they received from their allies. They had promised NATO that they would occupy Kursk and the Kurchatov nuclear power plant, but they had not counted on the defensive line held by the Akhmat Spetsnaz.
On March 8, Operation Tubo, carried out by my men, put an end to their illusions."
What was the secret of that victory?
"The fighting spirit of my men. 680 of them entered an unused gas pipeline only 1.40 meters wide, advanced in the dark along over 15 kilometers of pipelines and, two days later, reappeared behind the enemy, forcing them to abandon their positions and flee."
But what is Akhmat Spetsnaz?
"We are the most international unit in the Russian army. Not only do we include representatives of all nationalities in the federation, but also Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and even Africans. We are Muslims, Orthodox and believers of other religions, but we all fight in the name of God, for the protection of family and traditional values."
Chechens and Russians have fought two very bloody wars. How is it possible that you are fighting together?
"You're wrong. Even in those two wars, I and many other Chechens fought for Russia against jihadists and separatists."
And how is the war going in Ukraine?
"I would say we are winning. The enemy is suffering heavy losses and continues to retreat. Our troops, on the other hand, are advancing and liberating one or two settlements a day."
Why can't Ukrainians hold their position anymore?
The main reason is the lack of soldiers. They relied heavily on Western supplies. They were convinced that they could force Russia to sign a treaty on their terms. And in the end, they even managed to convince their Western allies. But this confidence led to disaster. They suffered staggering losses, much heavier than ours. That is why they can no longer find recruits to recruit and deploy to the front lines. And in the meantime, they face the depletion of American and European resources.
And isn't your army tired?
"Undoubtedly, after almost four years of war, we too are feeling the fatigue. Any army would feel it. Today, however, our troops are the ones with the highest mobilization capacity and the widest combat experience. We are also increasing the production of weapons and drones. At the end of the first year of the war, we were certainly in difficulty and lacking many things. But today the Russian economy has been completely reorganized.
