US President Donald Trump gave details of his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, saying the meeting would serve to outline the parameters of a peace deal before he speaks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders.
"I will meet with President Putin and we will see what he has in mind, and if it is a fair deal, I will reveal it to the leaders of the European Union and the leaders of NATO, as well as President Zelensky," Trump said, noting that he would call Zelensky first.
But Trump stressed that it is not his job to make a deal, but that of the two presidents who are in conflict, while adding that another meeting after this one scheduled for Friday will also include Zelensky.
" I'm not going to make a deal. It's not up to me to make a deal. I think a deal should be made for both of us ," Trump said.
In a veiled warning of the failure of Friday's meeting, Trump said Friday's meeting may not necessarily result in any movement. Trump further said he would try to return some territory to Ukraine during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
" Russia has occupied a large part of Ukraine. They have occupied the most important territory. We will try to return part of that territory to Ukraine ," he said at a press conference.
He also said Zelensky "might" attend his summit with the Russian leader in Alaska on Friday, but expressed skepticism that it would make a difference in reaching a peace deal.
"He wasn't part of this. I would say he could go, but he's been to a lot of meetings. You know, he's been there for three and a half years. Nothing happened. We're going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin, and at the end of that meeting, probably in the first two minutes, I'll know exactly whether a deal can be made or not," Trump told reporters at the White House.
