A 4-year-old child, the son of a tourist couple of Moldovan origin, has died after suffering a severe heat stroke in Olmedo, Sassari province.
According to preliminary investigations, the toddler left the apartment unnoticed by his parents, who were vacationing, and got into the family car, parked under the scorching sun.
The child was found unconscious inside the vehicle, where the temperature had exceeded 50 degrees Celsius. He was immediately transported to the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari and then urgently sent to the Gemelli hospital in Rome.
Despite medical efforts, he passed away on the morning of August 11, after several days in a coma due to irreversible brain damage.
The Rome prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident and determine possible responsibilities. Doctors and health experts recall the extreme risk of heatstroke, especially for children, and emphasize that children should never be left alone in vehicles, even for a few minutes.
