Yesterday evening the Spanish island of Tenerife was engulfed by a massive fire, causing the Spanish authorities to order the evacuation of 5 villages.
It is about the villages of Arrate, Chivisaya, Media Montaña, Ajafoña and Las Lagunetas, which have been evacuated and local authorities said that further measures will be taken during the day.
The fire engulfed a wooded area in steep canyons in the north-east of Tenerife, making the work of firefighters difficult, Reuters reports.
"The fire is powerful and is in a complicated area. Efforts are focused on preventing the fire from spreading, mainly in residential areas close to the coast," said the regional president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.
Authorities said there are about 10 helicopters dropping water from above, 150 firefighters and 50 military personnel, which could take more than a day to bring the situation under control.
By morning, the fire had burned about 1,300 hectares near the Teide volcano, which is Spain's highest peak, said Pedro Martinez, head of emergency services in Tenerife.
Rosa Davila, president of Tenerife's council, called on residents and visitors to stay away from forested areas because the fire could spread further and this is dangerous for people.
