Two German-Russians have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of espionage.
One of them is accused of agreeing to carry out attacks on potential targets, including US military facilities, in order to sabotage aid to Ukraine, prosecutors said on April 18.
The suspects, identified as Dieter S. and Alexander J., were arrested Wednesday in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth, federal prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said that Dieter S. had discussed possible acts of sabotage in Germany with a person connected to Russian intelligence since October, and that the main goal was to undermine Germany's military support for Ukraine. The suspect had declared himself ready to carry out bomb and arson attacks against infrastructure used by the military and industrial buildings in Germany, prosecutors said in a statement.
He had gathered information about potential targets, including on US military facilities, prosecutors said. According to them, Alexander J. is supposed to have helped him to carry out these attacks later. Dieter S. also, according to prosecutors, took photos and videos of military equipment and buildings and passed this information on to his contact in Russian intelligence.
Dieter S. also faces another charge, namely for participating in an armed unit of pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk region, in eastern Ukraine. He was allegedly a member of this unit from December 2014 to September 2016.
Otherwise, Germany is the second largest supplier - after the United States - of arms to Ukraine, after Russia launched its invasion of the neighboring country more than two years ago. The US, meanwhile, has a large military presence in Germany. /REL
