Ukraine faces "danger" if the United States does not quickly approve military aid to Kiev, former US national security adviser John Bolton said, as Russia's troop and weaponry advantage helps the Kremlin in its war against the neighboring country, which is now in its third year.
Speaking to Current Time, the Russian-language network run by Radio Free Europe in cooperation with VOA, Bolton pointed out that Russia is currently firing five or six artillery shells to one shell fired by Ukraine, a rate he said , "is not sustainable in the long term".
"I think the best thing is to hope until the US election [on November 5] is a stalemate [in the fighting] . I think [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is waiting for [former US President Donald] Trump. If he is elected, I will be very concerned about the future of Ukraine," said Bolton, emphasizing the growing isolationism within the Republican Party in the US "because of the Donald Trump effect."
This isolationism, he said, is paralyzing efforts to counter threats from Iran, Russia and China. Iran's recent attacks on Israel, he said, could serve as "shock therapy" for many Republicans in Congress.
"Ukraine needs help, Taiwan needs help ," he said. "All this is part of the same effort. I hope that during this week there will be real movement on all these fronts, especially regarding aid to Ukraine".
US House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump ally, appeared on April 15 to push for $95 billion in aid measures to be passed this week for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Of this amount, $61 billion in military aid is slated to be given to Kiev.
Bolton served as Trump's third national security adviser in 2018-2019. He was asked to resign from the post after months of differing opinions with the White House on policy. He was also the US ambassador to the United Nations during the term of President George W. Bush, and was a vocal supporter of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
He is currently a foreign policy advisor and political analyst.
If the Republican candidate for the US presidential elections, Donald Trump, wins the November elections, Bolton warned that he "will try to withdraw from NATO".
"It would be a catastrophic mistake for the US and the world if he did something like that," Bolton said. "The US withdrawal would essentially make NATO ineffective, not only for Ukraine, but for the entire alliance."
Russia under President Vladimir Putin "continues to be a threat, especially since its cooperation with China is growing and I think it will continue to grow ," said Bolton.
"It will be a threat until the Putin regime is somehow removed from power and Russia and democracy have a chance again. I don't know when that might happen. I am not optimistic", he added.
Bolton argued that in Russia there are no mechanisms for the peaceful transfer of power, in the country where Putin has been in power for a quarter of a century and where the elections are "clearly rigged".
"It will be a very dangerous period for Russia ," said Bolton. "Now it is less likely than ever that Russia will become part of the West" . / rel
