The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said that it is up to Ukraine to decide whether or not the right conditions have been met to start peace talks while facing Russian aggression.
Today's statement by Mr. Stoltenberg in Norway underlines the unchanged position of the alliance, after some comments by one of his colleagues this week.
"Only the Ukrainians can decide when the conditions for talks have been met and only they can decide what is an acceptable solution," said Mr. Stoltenberg.
His remarks follow comments by his chief of staff, Stian Jenssen, who said on Tuesday that Ukraine may have to cede territory for a peace deal with Russia. Afterwards, Mr Jenssen said he regretted his comments.
"His message, which is also my main message and the main message of NATO, is that the policy of the alliance remains unchanged, we support Ukraine", said Mr. Stoltenberg.
At a high-level meeting last month, NATO announced that it would invite Ukraine to join the alliance when "member countries agree and the conditions are met" and that the country has the right to choose its own path. independent from Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that while the outcome of the NATO meeting was positive, the ideal would be if Kiev had received a membership invitation.
Thousands of Ukrainian troops have been trained by Kiev's Western partners. Ukraine is also heavily dependent on Western arms supplies as it battles Russian forces since February 2022.
