The presence in Belarus of 8,000 soldiers belonging to the Wagner group, all expelled from Russia after their attempted mutiny last weekend, worries European Union countries bordering the country led by Aleksandr Lukashenko.
One of them, Poland, will reinforce the border (about 400 kilometers) with the Belarusian state. It was the Deputy Prime Minister of Poland, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who reported this decision: "These are dangerous elements for Ukraine and the Ukrainians know it. It is potentially dangerous for Lithuania as well and it can be dangerous for us as well."
The representative of the Polish executive described the position of Wagner's paramilitaries as a "dangerous element" and spoke of a possible escalation of the conflict: "This could mean a new phase of hybrid warfare, a much more difficult phase" .
Other members of the government, such as Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, explained that the cooperation of the Armed Forces and the Border Guard, responsible for border security, is key to "strengthening the security of the country".
Another one of those who justified the measure was the Polish Prime Minister, Andrzej Duda, who also spoke about the danger that the accommodation of Wagner's soldiers could pose for the neighboring countries of Belarus: "It is difficult for us today to rule out that their presence could pose a potential threat to us and a threat to Lithuania and Latvia".
For its part, NATO offered these countries sufficient guarantees through its Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg: "We send a clear message to Moscow and Minsk that NATO is there to protect every ally, every inch of NATO territory -s".
However, he confirmed that it is "too early" to draw conclusions.
What does Article 5 of NATO say?
"The parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them, occurring in Europe or North America, shall be considered an attack directed against all of them and, accordingly, they agree that if such an attack occurs, each of them, in the exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, shall assist the Party or Parties so attacked, by subsequently adopting , individually and in agreement with other Parties, the measures they deem necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain security in the North Atlantic region".
