Taiwan has reacted sharply to Chinese President Xi Jinping's statements regarding the island's independence issue, accusing Beijing of constituting the main threat to security in the region.
Taipei's reaction came after Chinese state media reported that Xi Jinping had told US President Donald Trump that the Taiwan issue remains the most sensitive topic in relations between China and the United States.
According to reports, the Chinese leader warned that any wrong handling of this issue could lead to a "very dangerous situation."
In response, Taiwanese cabinet spokeswoman Michelle Lee stated that China's military threat is the main factor destabilizing the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
"China's military threat is the sole source of insecurity in the Taiwan Strait and the broader Indo-Pacific region," she said.
Lee also stressed that strengthening defense and cooperation on prevention remain key elements for maintaining regional stability.
Xi Jinping, according to Chinese media, declared that "Taiwan independence and cross-strait peace are incompatible," comparing the relationship between them "like fire and water."
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly stated that it aims to reunify with the island, even by the use of force if necessary.
Meanwhile, the United States continues to maintain unofficial but strong relations with democratic Taiwan, while Washington has not clearly clarified whether it would intervene militarily in the event of an attack by China.
