Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that China and the United States have entered a new stage of strategic relations, after meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing.
According to China's Foreign Ministry, the two leaders agreed to build a "lasting constructive strategic relationship," which will serve as a guide for bilateral ties in the coming years.
The term has not previously been used in official communications between the two countries and is seen as an attempt to reformat US-China relations after years of trade tensions, technological clashes and geopolitical rivalry.
Xi Jinping described the new model as a relationship where cooperation remains the main element, while competition is controlled and differences are managed without escalation.
"Constructive strategic stability should be a positive stability characterized by cooperation, a stability with regulated competition and manageable differences," Xi declared.
He added that this formula "should not remain a slogan", but should be accompanied by concrete actions from both sides.
So far, the White House has not released a detailed statement on the terminology used in the meeting, which has increased diplomatic interest in the new formula promoted by Beijing.
The meeting comes at a time when US-China relations remain tense over issues such as Taiwan, technology, trade and influence in the Asia-Pacific, as both sides seek to avoid a direct economic and military clash.
