Ahead of a planned visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Florida on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that nothing will be decided until he approves it. "He has nothing until I approve it," Trump said in an interview with Politico magazine on Friday. "So we'll see what happens."
The White House confirmed a meeting between U.S. President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday in Palm Beach, Florida. It remains unclear whether talks will also include the Russian side. Russia was not mentioned in the announcement.
Zelensky optimistic
President Zelensky himself previously announced that a security agreement between Ukraine and the US was "almost finished." The draft of a 20-point plan was 90 percent complete, Reuters news agency reported, Zelensky wrote in a WhatsApp conversation with reporters.
Zelensky previously told the Axios news website that the US had offered a 15-year security guarantee agreement, which could be extended. However, Kiev wanted a longer term.
"Full support" from Europe and Canada
Before his trip to the US, Zelensky also consulted with European allies. At the initiative of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the Ukrainian president briefed a number of heads of state and government and representatives of the EU and NATO about his upcoming talks with Trump, the German government announced in the evening.
No specific details have been released yet. A statement said that eleven heads of state and government from Europe and Canada, as well as NATO and EU leaders, assured Ukraine of their "full support" and stressed their commitment to work "in close coordination with the United States for a lasting and just peace in Ukraine."
Zelensky stressed on Saturday that Europe must continue to work together. "We are coordinating our positions and everyone in Europe must unite to defend our European way of life, the independence of our states and peace in Europe. There must be peace," Zelensky wrote on Platform X./DW
