US-Iran meeting/ The first phase of talks closes, negotiations move to expert

Talks between the US and Iran appear to be going well so far. While details from the meeting are scarce, the Iranian government, in a post on X, said the talks had entered the expert-level phase, with economic, military, legal and nuclear committees meeting.

"The talks between Iran and the US in Islamabad entered the expert-level phase, as the economic, military, legal and nuclear committees joined. Negotiations continue at the Serena Hotel to finalize technical details," the announcement said.

According to recent reports, expert teams from both sides exchanged written texts on the issues under discussion after the conclusion of the face-to-face talks. Foreign media are reporting a positive atmosphere and that there has been progress on some demands between the parties. 

But there has been a stalemate over control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran insists on retaining authority over the waterway, rejecting proposals for joint control.

With the completion of the first phase, another phase of talks could begin late tonight, or it could be left for tomorrow. 

The talks are taking place during a two-week lull in the US-Israeli war against Iran, which began with US-Israeli attacks on February 28. The conflict, which spread across the Middle East and caused shockwaves in global economies.

We recall that the American delegation is headed by US Vice President JD Vance, who is accompanied by US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff.

While the Iranian delegation is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and also includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, along with other leaders.
