Tariffs, Trump's coup born of anger

To understand the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump, we must start with a keyword Rage, which means “anger” or “anger”. But for the American political right, Rage has another meaning, as an acronym for “Retire All Government Employees”, which means “to retire all state employees”. This concept was created by Curtis Yarvin, a leading figure in the American technology industry who later became a philosopher and political thinker.

It is important to connect Yarvin's idea of Rage to Trump's tariffs, as both are part of a long-term plan to fundamentally change the political and social system in the US. The main goal of "Rage" is to drastically reduce public administration and government spending, so that the savings obtained can be used to reduce taxes, especially for technology corporations, which are considered the main engines of economic growth.

In practice, Trump has begun implementing this plan by creating the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was headed by Elon Musk, a tech icon. The goal was to increase the efficiency of the administration and implement major spending cuts, including sending thousands of state employees into early retirement. However, immediate changes proved difficult, and Musk left after just four months, suggesting a softer, more gradual approach.

To finance tax cuts and support Big Tech, Trump used tariffs as his main tool. Under this model, import taxes serve as an “ATM card” to extract money from exporters operating in the U.S. The initial strategy aimed to rebuild the country’s industry by increasing domestic production and restricting foreign goods.

At a deeper level, this project aims for a radical transformation of the political system, democracy, which according to Yarvin has failed, should be replaced with another form of government, which he calls “monarchy”, an authoritarian system led by an elected elite, namely leaders of the technology industry or figures like Trump. In 2011, Yarvin had described Trump as “biologically suited” for this role, having the energy necessary to overthrow the current system that he calls “the Cathedral”, a combination of the media, universities and bureaucracy, which promote values such as diversity, inclusion and equality, which he sharply criticizes.

This project is not just a conspiracy theory, it has real influence within the Trump administration, including voices like Vice President JD Vance, who has called Yarvin “a source of inspiration.” The Rage plan envisions replacing public employees with “our people,” aiming to overthrow the liberal elite and install a new ruling class representing diverse interests.

A concrete example is Trump's tense relationship with Jerome Powell, the head of the Federal Reserve, whom Trump has sharply criticized for not lowering interest rates, accusing him of not cooperating with this project.

However, the project envisages the new elite creating a strong connection with the popular masses, representing them as the "hobbits" from the "Lord of the Rings" saga, a model taken as inspiration by several political figures, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

In the end, Trump's tariffs are just one part of a larger plan to create an "aristocratic technocracy," where power is concentrated in technology and a new elite, undermining the existing democratic system. But studies show that such regimes often lead to corruption, crisis, and long-term poverty, and it will take time for citizens, the "hobbits," to understand this reality.
