"Let's avenge Gaza", UN Secretary-General: We must not fear

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that they should not be intimidated by the Israeli government's threats to retaliate against recognition of a Palestinian state or other supportive policies for the Palestinians.

"We must not fear the risk of retaliation, because no matter what we do, Israel's actions will continue," said Mr. Guterres, referring to the recent decisions of Benjamin Netanyahu's government aimed at "the complete destruction of Gaza" and promoting the "aggressive annexation of the West Bank," Palestinian territory occupied by the Israeli army since the Seven Day War in 1967.

In light of the recognition of the state of Palestine, which is scheduled to be advanced on Monday during a session at the UN by France and other countries, Israeli officials have openly threatened Paris that there will be diplomatic retaliation, as well as that the annexation of the West Bank will continue.

However, for Antonio Guterres, this is nothing more than a "pretext" for Israel, whose policy in the Palestinian territories shows that it has no intention of "allowing the Palestinians to have a state."

"I think it's important" that Israel "feels increasingly isolated" in order to be persuaded to "change" its policy, the UN chief insisted.

A staunch supporter of the two-state solution, Israeli and Palestinian, the Secretary-General described the prospect of new recognitions of the state of Palestine as “extremely important” symbolism “for the Palestinian people.”

"What is the alternative? The solution of a state in which millions of Palestinians will be expelled or suffer occupation, slavery, discrimination, without rights and without their land? This is completely unacceptable in the 21st century," he said.

He also called once again for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip: "What we are witnessing in Gaza is horrific. It is the worst level of death and destruction I have seen since I have been Secretary-General, perhaps in my entire life."

"I strongly believe that this is intolerable from a moral, political and legal point of view," said Antonio Guterres, avoiding, however, the use of the term "genocide" in the absence of a decision by the judiciary.
