Tehran sets strict conditions in indirect talks with Washington, while also signaling limited flexibility
In a significant development in the indirect negotiations announced by US President Donald Trump, Iran presented a package of non-negotiable conditions for an end to hostilities, Israeli television Channel 12 reported. These conditions include strategic demands that could significantly affect the geopolitical balance in the region.
According to the report, Iranian officials are seeking strong guarantees to avoid future conflicts, as well as a new agreement on the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal aims to place this vital maritime corridor, a key hub for international shipping and the global oil trade, under Iranian control.
At the same time, Iran is demanding the closure of US military bases across the Middle East and economic compensation for damages suffered during the conflict. These demands pose direct challenges to the US and its allies, as they affect their interests and presence in the region.
However, a second report by Channel 12 suggests that Iran may be showing limited flexibility, privately. According to sources attributed to the US side, Tehran appears willing to suspend its ballistic missile program for five years and limit uranium enrichment.
Iran could also open negotiations on its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium and allow inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on existing centrifuges. Another important element is the possibility of cutting off funding for allied armed groups in the region, such as Hezbollah, Hamas and militias in Iraq.
The terms presented and possible concessions reflect the complexity of the negotiations between the parties. The Strait of Hormuz and the US military presence remain key sticking points, while the nuclear program and support for regional groups continue to be central security issues.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had a conversation with US President Donald Trump, who sees possibilities for reaching an agreement with Iran.
According to Netanyahu, Trump believes he can use "the significant achievements of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the US military as a pressure tool to fulfill war objectives through an agreement that will protect vital interests."
At the same time, Netanyahu stressed that Israel remains determined to defend its interests "at all costs" and that it continues strikes against Iran and Lebanon.
"We are striking (Iran's) missile and nuclear programs and we continue to strongly attack Hezbollah," he declared, adding, "just a few days ago we eliminated two more nuclear scientists and we remain on full alert."
