How real is Iran's threat to Europe and which areas fall within the range of ballistic missiles?
The Iranians launched ballistic missiles against the US base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, about 4,000 kilometers from Iranian territory, causing strong concern in Europe.
Star Television presented on a map how far a ballistic missile with a range of 4,000 kilometers can reach and which areas it can theoretically hit.
According to this presentation:
At a distance of 300 kilometers is Turkey.
At 1,000 kilometers is Cyprus.
At 2,000 kilometers is all of Greece, up to the Ionian Islands, as well as the Balkans, Romania and Ukraine.
At 3,000 kilometers are countries of Central and Northern Europe, such as Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and Sweden.
At 4,000 kilometers, the radius reaches a large part of Europe, up to London and Norway.
However, there are many air defense systems that can intervene to stop such a missile.
It is estimated that at least 17 different air defense systems operate in Europe, which means that it is by no means certain that a missile will manage to hit its target, even if it is launched.
Beyond the military aspect, the threat and uncertainty that is created are also affecting the economy, increasing uncertainty and concern in European markets.
