USS Tripoli forces head to Hormuz, as Pentagon considers taking strategic Kharg Island
The United States is considering military intervention in Hormuz if there is no agreement with Iran by Friday, when Trump's ultimatum expires.
The news is reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the developments.
According to the report, the amphibious assault ship USS New Orleans and about 2,200 Marines from the 31st Marine Division will be transferred to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for US forces in the Middle East. After arriving in the region, the troops will need about two more days to reach the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global oil circulation.
At the same time, The New York Times reported that the Pentagon is considering an even more advanced military scenario: sending about 3,000 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division as part of a rapid reaction force.
Under this plan, the troops could be used to support operations on Iranian territory and, if deemed necessary, to take control of Kharg Island. The island is the main hub for Iran's oil exports and is of great strategic importance to the country's economy.
The brigade involved is part of the "Immediate Response Force", a unit that can be deployed anywhere in the world within 18 hours. It is expected to operate in coordination with naval units already moving to the region.
According to military sources, the Marines may intervene first to secure and repair the airport infrastructure on Kharg Island, damaged by recent US airstrikes. This would then allow the landing of C-130 transport aircraft, which would bring in additional troops, equipment and supplies.
The paratroopers of the 82nd Division, although not equipped with heavy weaponry, are considered essential for rapid and flexible interventions, providing immediate support and reinforcing forces on the ground after the initial phase of operations.
These developments indicate a significant increase in tensions and preparations for various scenarios, from diplomatic pressure to a possible broader military intervention in the region. /Pamphlet
