Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have begun a phone conversation aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine.
As CNN reports, Trump is also expected to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately after the call with Putin, as well as with European NATO leaders.
According to Reuters, Putin is in Sochi, on the Black Sea, while Trump is in Washington.
The talks are conducted via encrypted lines, with the participation of translators. Vladimir Putin understands English, but in negotiations he prefers Russian.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS, the Kremlin spokesman said that ending the war in Ukraine would require "quite painstaking and, perhaps, prolonged work."
It is noted that Trump is also open to a meeting with Putin, however, "everything" remains on the table, even secondary sanctions, while immediately after the phone calls, the American president is expected to make statements.
For its part, the Kremlin, as reported by the state news agency RIA citing a statement by spokesman Dmitry Peskov, said that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump is not currently being prepared.
